I recently approached mining scaffolding supply company, Pilbara Access to see if they had an employee who would love a new look. Enter Garth Hunter. Thirty one years old, three kids and partner in Perth - working away on-site and (like many FIFO workers) didn't enjoy clothes shopping. Armed with $500 from his employer, we hit the shops. Our goal was to transform Garth's somewhat rugged look in 3 hours.
After speaking with Garth and learning a bit about his lifestyle and how he spends his time, I had more of an idea of where to take him shopping.
His lifestyle is largely centred around working on mining sites while away and enjoying time with his family when back in Perth. Kids sport, school runs, an evening at the pub. . . .the clothes I selected for Garth, had to suit these occasions and say something about him as a person. The shirt he was wearing in the before photo, (a nod to his kiwi mates) was a look maybe best kept for the dusty plains of the mine site.
The brief was to update Garth's look and find him some clothes to wear when going out as most of his wardrobe consisted of work clothes. But things first, it had to be off to Maurice Meade to cut some shape into that hair...
The staff at Maurice Meade talked to Garth about various options that might suit his curly hair and opted for a low maintenance style that he could easily add product to when going out. A camouflage colour, kept things natural and helped to blend away the greys.
On to see Anthony at Johnny Aquilia, one of the original and best places in Perth to have a traditional hot towel face shave. I tried to talk Garth into some designer stubble to no avail. . . it may be the trend right now, but his beard was itchy and he wanted it gone. Anthony discussed maybe keeping a little on the chin to add some more masculinity to his look.
A traditional hot towel shave involves softening the skin with high quality creams, a shave with a cut throat razor, followed by a steaming hot towel applied to the whole face. The result is baby soft skin which is an experience not to be missed.
Johnny Aquilia sell shaving brushes and creams to facilitate the optimum shave. There's even a cream to lift the beard for a closer cut. Resulting in a the closest of close shaves and a rash-free face.
The process is carried out with precision and at $44 is a truly luxurious experience for the boys.
To finish off with, Garth was whisked through the shops - his only task - to simply try on the pieces carefully selected to suit his needs. He literally walked into the store and the sales assistant showed him to his own change room with the clothes set aside for him ready to try on. Simple. The results speak for themselves.
Thank you to Pilbara Access for their generous donation of $500 to assist Garth with his transformation and to Garth who didn't love shopping but hung in there and hopefully learnt a thing or two along the way.
